Types of residential roofing materials
Shopping for a new roof can be a pain in what you know,
especially if you are not owned by the types of roofing products on the market
today. We will try to clarify some confusion with the chart below. It provides
you with a basic visual representation of some of the steep roofing products
used in the market.
The most common roofing materials in the United States
include asphalt lock boards, metals, wood, tiles, and rolls. Shingles are the
most popular residential roofing materials in decades and are used in nearly
three out of every four homes in the United States, but mineral and synthetic
products have been trending up in recent years due to their increased
durability and lower prices.
Shingles
The least expensive roofing materials - and thus the most
common - in the market are shingles 3 tabs. They have a life expectancy of 12
to 20 years. Architectural shingles give a three-dimensional appearance to the
roof and are made of fiberglass layers, making them more durable than
conventional organic shingles.
The premium roofing shelves may be guaranteed by the
manufacturer for life, although the actual age of these ceilings is 25 to 50
years.
Wood shakes and shingles
Cedar is the most common material used in wood roofing. It
provides a very beautiful and durable look if properly maintained. Wood panels
or ceilings require more maintenance than other roofing materials. Shake and
wood shingles can be bent using steam to get a unique curved appearance.
Tile
Concrete or tiled roofs are common in the south and west of
the United States but are also suitable for cooler climates. These ceilings are
properly installed and are exceptionally durable and weather resistant. Barrels
are a common choice, but flat tiles provide equally good performance and
wellbeing.
Slate
Slate is a natural rock mined in different parts of the
world. It is the most expensive type of roofing material, but it can also last
longer - there are still roofs of panels used centuries ago.
Apart from the steep cost of the slate, the main downside of
the material is its weight. You should be sure that your roofing structure is
designed to retain the extra weight of the panels, which can be five times
heavier than the composite fiberglass panels.
There are roofing products in the market designed to reduce
product weight by 50 percent or more and this may be a good choice for many
homeowners.
Metal
Metal roofing products, including seam and shingles, are
made of aluminum or steel.
Aluminum products are a bit more expensive but they are a
better option if you live near the ocean because of the natural aluminum
resistance to corrosion. Modern steel roofing products are coated with
corrosion-resistant chemicals to help prevent deterioration.
Metal roofing products are among the fastest growing roofing
materials in the country because they are lightweight, help to reduce energy
bills, durable, weather resistant and can last for 50 years or more.
Copper ceilings are often used on bay windows or in
decorative areas of the ceiling. The brass ages create a look of desirable
blue-blue patina. You can also paint the copper protected if you want to
maintain the appearance of "new" copper.
